Roads looked more like raging rivers across much of Hong Kong yesterday afternoon with more than 100 millimeters of rain hammering down in many districts as the first ever black rainstorm warning in October was signaled. Eastern District the downpour exceeded 150mm. Yet, the bad weather did not stop the social worker from saving a student in danger.

Districts faced different challenges during the afternoon and into the evening.

Conditions were bad in much of Hong Kong Island, with roads under water and some malls flooded.

Stretches of steps and slopes in Chai Wan and North Point became waterfalls, bringing transport on roads below to a standstill.

It was particularly hazardous for young schoolchildren to return home, with even adults struggling to cross roads. One of the photos online on 10 Oct showed that a girl student took a shelter at minibus stop from rain. However, the floodwater was too strong and flushed her to the road hundred meters away.

Luckily, the student was saved by Miss Yeung wing-yan, the social worker at Epworth Integrated Youth Team, Chai Wan. Miss Yeung was going to work at that time, seeing a girl sitting at the road center. She asked if she was alright. The girl could barely walk. Miss Yeung used the umbrella and tried to pull the girl back. Yet, the broken concrete in the floodwater hit Miss Yeung's legs which made her difficult to save the student. The girl finally had been saved by Miss Yeung after multiple trials. She was shaking and found bruises after rescued.

Miss Yeung hopes that no similar incident will happen again and the drainage system in the district can be modified soon.

Some people took to social media to complain about the drainage systems not being up to the mark as flooding was felt.
