Children and girls rights group, Plan International Australia, has launched a social media campaign that included ‘period emoji’ contest. The organization has created five designs and ask people vote for the best representation. The winner will send to the Unicode Consortium, governing organization that standardizes characters across devices.
The five emoji options included a sanitary towel, a diagram of a uterus, period underwear, a calendar and animated blood droplets.
Women today have an estimated 450 periods during their lifetime. "Even though at least 800 million women and girls between the ages of 15 and 49 are menstruating right now, there isn’t a single emoji to represent periods. Isn’t it ridiculous that there’s a long nose goblin emoji and a floppy disc emoji, but no period emoji?" says Susanne Legena, Deputy CEO for Plan International in Australia.
We will know the result until the submission deadline passes on July 1.
