‧ Student Nurse Suffers from Rare Brain Cancer; Mother and Son Defiantly and Tenderly Push the Limits of Life
Student nurse Ian Cho Yi-lok, who is battling the rare brain cancer "Non-Germinomatous Germ Cell Tumor" (NGGCT),
is currently undergoing targeted therapy after gamma knife surgery successfully reduced his brain tumor from 46cc to 3.6cc.
However, during a follow-up appointment late last month, he suddenly experienced difficulty breathing and was unable to cough up phlegm, requiring an immediate transfer to the ICU for intubation and mechanical ventilation.
After medical examinations, doctors believe the targeted therapy may be working, causing the spinal tumor cells to dissolve. This resulted in edema and secretions that compressed his nerves, leading to Ian's breathing difficulties. Faced with this sudden challenge, and following an evaluation, the doctors decided to perform a tracheostomy on Ian.
With his indomitable will, Ian’s condition has continued to improve. After 8 days in the ICU and 9 days in an isolation ward, he was finally able to be discharged and return home to rest.
