The Concept of Exhibition

“CONNECTION” brings together not only people in need, but also the community as a whole; we think that connecting people is the core of what the members in the construction industry do. Construction means joining constituent parts of a building or structure. It is indeed the creation of an environment in which people can enrich their lives by connecting with others.

About Beneficiaries

This charitable photo exhibition will raise funds for Construction Charity Fund and Lifewire. Construction Charity Fund is a compassionate charity fund to provide immediate financial assistance and condolence to families and workers who lost their lives in construction-related accidents while Lifewire is a crowdfunding platform set up by Chun Wo to financially support children who have medical needs. 50 % of the fund raised from this exhibition will be donated to Construction Charity Fund while another 50% will be for Lifewire.

“Construction Charity Fund”

“Construction Charity Fund” (the Fund), which was set up by the construction industry, shows concern and recognition for workers who suffered injuries or died in fatal industrial accidents and to initially provide immediate financial assistance and condolences to families and workers who died in construction-related accidents. The Construction Charity Fund was co-founded by Legislative Councillor the Hon Mr. Abraham SHEK Lai-him, GBS, JP, Hong Kong Construction Association (HKCA), Hong Kong Federation of Electrical & Mechanical Contractors (HKFEMC), Hong Kong Construction Sub-Contractors Association (HKCSA) and Hong Kong Construction Industry Employees General Union (HKCIEGU). Since it started operation on 1 October 2009, the Fund has given out HK$16.53 million to 182 families as condolence payments as at 9 March 2015. The Fund was formally launched on 26 February 2010, officiated by Mrs. Carrie Lam, GBS, JP, the Secretary for Development (current Chief Secretary for Administration).

In addition to financial support, the Fund has a social worker to provide follow-up and counseling service to individual family members of the deceased. The Fund would also refer the families to other charitable organizations, as appropriate, to apply for education subsidies for the school-age children of the affected families. By doing so, they hope to help these families to get back to a normal life as quickly as possible.

“CONNECTION” aims to enhance public impression on the construction industry through displaying 92 photos taken at twenty-two Chun Wo’s construction projects by Ming Thein, a renowned international photographer. There are altogether 5 photo galleries in our exhibition, namely People, Scale, Details, Results and the Photographs by Ir Dr. Derrick Pang.

About Ming Thein—A renowned international photographer

Ming Thein | Photographer

Ming Thein is a passionate commercial photographer with over a decade of experience in photography and a focus on corporate documentary, architecture, luxury goods and fine art. In addition to Chun Wo, his clients include Richemont (Jaeger Le-Coultre, Van Cleef&Arpels), Swatch Group, Nissan,HijjasKasturi Architects, KenzoTange Architects and a number of large corporates in Malaysia.He was not always a photographer; Ming graduated from Oxford at 16 with a Masters in Physics, subsequently pursuing a successful corporate career in the UK and Asia culminating in Senior Director and VP positions in finance and strategy at multinational corporations.

However, every spare minute out of the office was spent pursuing a passion for photography and design. Spurred on by serendipitous timing of several client offers and an invitation to join Getty Images, Ming has been photographing full time since the end of 2011.

Ming's natural focus and drive has lead to photography going beyond making images; in 2013 he started serving as director and storyboard author on several video productions for existing corporate clients including Nissan and Sunway. He teaches workshops internationally, and runs a popular photography community atwww.mingthein.com where he shares his work, ideas and passion with international photographers; the site sees around half a million visitors a month. He is currently focused on pushing the limits of fine art printing, with the aim to bring the experience of absolute transparency of concept to his audience.

Ir Dr. Derrick Pang, Deputy Chairman of Chun Wo

Ir Dr. Derrick Pang graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science degree and obtained a Master of Engineering degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1998 and a Master degree in Business Administration from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2007. He obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in Civil Engineering from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2014. Ir Dr. Derrick Pang is a member of The Institution of Civil Engineers, the United Kingdom and The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers and a Registered Professional Engineer for the State of California, U.S.A. He has over 3 years of geotechnical design experience in the United States and over 10 years of construction experience in Hong Kong. Ir Dr. Derrick Pang joined Chun Wo Development Holdings Limited in 2001 and holds several directorships in certain subsidiaries of the Group. He was appointed as Deputy Chairman and Executive Director of Chun Wo in 2010.

Ir Dr. Derrick Pang sponsors and participates in a diverse range of charitable activities like “CONNECTION” and spreads his kindness to Hong Kong’s community through actions. His public services in the construction industry include the following: Ir Dr. Derrick Pang is the Chairman of Construction Industry Council’s Construction Industry Training Board, the Vice President of Hong Kong Institution of Highways and Transportation, the Executive Committee Member of the Hong Kong Professionals and Senior Executives Association and the Executive Board Honorable Secretary of the Hong Kong Construction Association. Some of the photographs displayed in “CONNECTION” are contributed by Ir Dr. Derrick Pang. It aims to let the public know, from the perspective of an industry veteran, how this charitable exhibition brings together the local community and the people in need.
