#Corporate Social Responsibility

During the home visit to the patient, active listening is important to send a message to the patient that he or she is not alone. This was the first time that the staff of Kwan Lee Holding Limited (Kwan Lee) joined Lifewire to visit and film Ho Chun Kit (Chun Ki) who was suffering from a rare disease, succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase deficiency (SSADH) to understand his needs and the hardship of his carer.

Be brave to speak up. Show consideration by active listening

“I am very grateful to Hong Kong people including doctors, social workers, enterprises and the general public for their help,” said Chun Kit’s mother. She finally got a way to release her stress of taking care Chun Kit by talking to the visitors. The staff of Kwan Lee gave some toys and notebooks to Chun Kit and his little sister. His sister immediately drew and wrote on the notebook to cheer Chun Kit up. She also wrote to encourage her mother.

A small gift became a medium of showing support and love in a family. A volunteer, Isaac, learnt more in the home visit. “When we were buying the gifts for them, we thought hard what Chun Kit’s family needed. After this home visit, we have known more what the patient of rare disease needs,” Issac said.

The whole company improves by bringing inspiration to the staff and building positive atmosphere

The director of Kwan Lee and the committee member of Lifewire, Anthony, has been encouraging his staff to participate in voluntary work because he hopes that the experience of volunteering will inspire them. Anthony has discovered that his staff have become more positive and happier since the home visit, so as the atmosphere in the company.

The staff grow with the company.

The staff of Kwan Lee were inspired by the experience of visiting the family of the patient with rare disease under the Corporate Social Responsibility Programme of Lifewire.

The staff shared their feelings during the debriefing session after the home visit. The positive attitude in front of difficulties of Chun Kit’s family impressed them a lot. They reflected how to maintain positive mentality and support their families and colleagues during the pandemic. The atmosphere of the company has improved since the home visit.

I wish all enterprises discharge their corporate social responsibility in order to bring more positive energy to our society. Based on my experience of joining the Corporate Social Responsibility Programme, I am confident that the volunteering work experience will help the company improve as the staff will be more caring and observant.

Finally, I want to show my strong support for Chun Kit’s mother. I know being the mother of a child suffering from rare disease is not easy. Indeed, many people in the society are considerate and willing to give a helping hand. We will try our best to help. Never give up!
