Lifewire was interviewed by Steven Ma on RTHK Radio 2's new show 《同理‧繼續傾》, where he and guest host Sandy Chan talked to listeners about rare diseases and shared their work experiences.
Due to muscle degeneration and atrophy, the average life expectancy of patients is only 18 years.
Guest host Sandy Chan "Children with rare diseases are not counting down, but cherishing every moment."
There are many unexplained things in the world, and many strange illnesses have no known causes.
During the interview, the rare disease of hyperphagia was mentioned. Hyperphagia is actually a rare disease. The condition is a constant desire to eat that cannot be controlled. Their eating may be so severe that their family members may lock the refrigerator and they may rush into convenience stores or supermarkets to eat. This disease can cause tooth decay, obesity, heart problems due to excessive eating.
"As the head of an organization, facing so many children with rare diseases, is it inevitable that I feel sad?" Rochelle said, "I am constantly learning, learning to accept and learning to detach."
Since society lacks resources to focus on the needs of sick children, many family members seek help from Lifewire at all times, no matter how big or small the issue is. "There was a sewer bursting in a sick child's home, and they called me, I am always on call!" Despite the hard work, every time when Rochelle and her team see the beneficiaries satisfied, happy, it feels like everything is worth it.
Although the condition of the sick child is important, the physical and mental health of the caregiver cannot be ignored. Rochelle said the sick children in some cases had grown up, in their teens, about sixty or seventy pounds. However, due to physical condition of the children, they need to be carried by parents to bathe, brush their teeth, are under long-term care. In fact, many caregivers have developed health problems such as muscle strain due to long-term care. Therefore, Lifewire also sought out Chinese medicine and acupuncture to provide free medical consultations for caregivers.
Many children with rare diseases are diagnosed by doctors as not being able to live past the age of 18, so Lifewire will also bring special experiences to children to make their lives wonderful. For example, Lifewire once arranged for sick children to run 100 kilometers in the desert and helped them realize their dreams of becoming directors.
Rochelle mentioned that in a recent volunteer activity to distribute supplies, many volunteers shared that they not only distributed supplies, but also cared about the conditions of sick children. They chatted with the sick children's families for more than an hour. Although they had never met each other before, their sincerity made the sick children's families let down their guard and express their inner emotions with peace of mind, pouring out many of their feelings.
